Shopping, like life, is about choices, and the choices that we make matter. I am clearly a huge proponent of mindfulness and shopping strategically as I have built my business on a “shop smarter” platform. Lately I have been putting a lot of thought into sourcing and I would be remiss if I didn’t also suggest that we take it one (incredibly important) step further. We need to shop consciously.

Our acquisitive culture has the marketplace so over-saturated that shopping can be both overwhelming and underwhelming. One upside: with all of this product, we can be selective. We can choose the brands that are ethically and environmentally conscious. We can choose to buy clothing from companies that focus on cleaner sourcing and production. And we can choose to promote better living conditions by purchasing handmade items from small artisans across the globe (big shout out to my ladies at The Accessory Junkie and Ash & Ames) rather than supporting factories that do the opposite.

So please, consider this friendly call to action: take an objective look at what you’re buying and identify opportunities to have a softer impact on our people and our planet (one suggestion would be to funnel the money you spend top line into fewer, more conscious pieces). With amazing, well-priced brands like Aritzia, Everlane, Reformation and H&M Conscious, your style doesn’t have to suffer for fashion, and neither does the world around you…and, believe me, nothing looks better than a clean conscience.
